As an emerging leader in the indoor air quality market, Alen noticed that the appearance of many air purifiers caused users to place them out of sight – far from where they are most effective. With superior purification technology, Alen set out to remedy this issue and improve the quality of life for allergy, asthma, mold and pollen sufferers. Alen leveraged M3’s design expertise to create a flagship product that would build upon their brand equity, further their reputation as a progressive market leader, and penetrate deeper into the air purifier market.
M3 solved the challenge by delivering a design that incorporates innovative, user-friendly features such as an easy access door to simplify filter replacement, cable management to store any unused power cable, and an intuitive user interface. The frosted, gentle outer form is a refreshing aesthetic departure from other purifiers, and provides a subtle glimpse of the filtering process within. The distinct silhouette makes the purifier immediately recognizable, and the unique shape of the capacitive buttons is echoed throughout the design to create a harmonious effect. All of this is achieved with the purpose of maximizing the efficiency of the purification process.
Paralda’s innovative appearance compliments its cutting edge technology - it is the first air purifier ever to be lead-free, Energy Star qualified, and ozone safe. The eye-catching design made a splash at industry tradeshows, and quickly established a new benchmark in the air purifier market. Available in a full spectrum of colors, the Paralda is at home in any décor, and helps move air purifiers out of the corner of the room and into a place where they can help users breathe more easily.
Strategy: In order to uncover opportunities and achieve Alen’s business goals, M3 investigated buyer’s motivations, the competitive landscape and also how customers viewed the Alen brand. A more universal human appeal was deemed necessary, as well as a more discreet and sophisticated aesthetic that is harmonious in the home environment. The design must be recognizable and appealing when viewed on screen at a small scale due to the prevalence of online retail.
Concept: After recognizing several broad home design trends, numerous concepts were developed into both functional and aesthetic models. This ensured that the designs were appropriate within the home environment and achieved the desired experience.
